Obstetrics & Gynaecology leadership in Australia & New Zealand: where to for gender equity?

As the leading medical specialty for women’s healthcare in Australia and New Zealand, RANZCOG should be a lead organization in promoting gender equity. Despite the predominately female membership there are however few women in leadership positions.

This site contains the synthesis of Master's research and subsequent thesis for the University of Melbourne, along with the resulting academic paper that was sadly rejected for publication.

In recognition of the many RANZCOG obstetricians & gynaecologists who contributed their views to this research, and the persisting need for diverse leadership at all levels of the specialty, the article and supporting data are instead presented here. Enjoy!

Executive Summary

Audit of O&G Leadership 👑

Gender–leadership make up of RANZCOG & RANZCOG accredited hospitals in Australia & NZ (98 sites), and O&G university departments in Australia & NZ (18 sites) were audited.

Leadership Disparity 👫

Leadership–gender in O&G is poorly representative of both trainees & specialists, except in RANZCOG educational leadership roles. Disparity worsens with seniority of position.

Not Unique to O&G ❄️

Neither RANZCOG or O&G has a unique gender-leadership gap. 'Pipeline' is not the primary barrier, suggesting wider cultural issues along with institutional & individual gender biases.

RANZCOG Survey ✉️

Online survey of all 2,530 RANZCOG members seeking gender and leadership views and experiences. This underwent both quantitative and qualitative thematic analysis.

Gender Bias Experience 😔

A significant proportion of both female (54%) and male (29%) responders reported gender-bias experience. This was highest among trainees (56% & 50% respectively).

Barriers to Leadership 🧱

Many reported barriers to leadership were similar among genders, although were almost always rated higher by women. Women desired higher levels of leadership.
